As SCINDeA is committed to empowering the subaltern groups or the marginalised communities since its inception in 1993, we have been nurturing healthy community participation through different results-based interventions.
To this extent, SCINDeA in its core interventions focuses its attention on promoting socio-economic development, child development, imparting social education, networking and collaboration, promoting climate smart agriculture, climate change education, mangrove restoration and developing mini-forests.
Social Education to communities plays a vital role in the lives of people in changing their way of thinking, approaches and behaviour. People become aware of their constitutional rights and power of citizenship. 8 fundamental chapters of Social Education are taught to people through village units and SHGs in 319 villages covering 2.5 lakh population.
SCINDeA aims to contribute to improve the socio-economic status of the marginalised communities by accessing government schemes wherein individuals and the communities at large can improve their socio-economic well-being, reduce vulnerability, and participate in the development process. We mobilize these schemes in collaboration with government departments inviting them to participate and share their expertise through orientation, awareness generation, capacity building and outreach programmes about the government schemes.
18,200 selected beneficiaries from 319 remote villages have been given orientation cum capacity building on various government schemes to receive benefits and resources.
SCINDeA provides various skill training to youth, men & women on basic computer programme, driving, tailoring, aari work, bee-keeping, cocoon rearing, dairy farming and value-additions products from small millets in the villages through tie-ups with local institutions.

SCINDeA recognizes the inherent rights of children, as enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). For the past 10 years SCINDeA’s main focus has also been child development. Regular training modules developed by SCINDeA are conducted in life skill education and constitutional rights for children in 3rd – 9th grades & 6th – 9th grades respectively. Once a year career guidance programmes are conducted for children in 10th – 12th grades.
SCINDeA also involves in strengthening School Management Committees (SMCs), Village Level Child Protection Committees (VLCPCs). At the panchayat level SCINDeA promotes Child Friendly Villages. By prioritizing child development, we promote social justice and equity, addressing the disparities and inequalities that affect children's lives.
In the last 3 years SCINDeA has conducted :
Climate Change Education helps people understand and address the impacts of the climate change and empowers them with the knowledge, skills, values and atitudes needed to act as agents of change. Climate Change education in SCINDeA is a key component of our work in education. SCINDeA has prepared a manual on Climate Change in Tamil, Telegu and Kannada. So far 5618 men, women and children have been trained through our village units and SHG groups.
Keeping in mind the present climate crisis SCINDeA works with farmers in promoting climate smart agriculture. Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) is an approach to agriculture that aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve agricultural productivity and resilience of the farming community.
94 Farmer Groups consisting of both male and female farmers @ 15 -20 farmers/group have been formed in 94 villages. From among the 94 farmer groups 303 lead farmers of which 205 are men and 98 are women have been trained in 5 modules of climate smart agriculture. The lead farmers in turn have trained 1277 farmers who are members of 94 farmer groups in climate smart agriculture.
Today a minimum of 5 -6 climate smart sustainable agriculture practices are being practiced by the farmers. They are also linked to the agriculture/horticulture depts. for govt. schemes to enhance climate smart agriculture practices.
In the Pulicat lake in Tiruvalluvar district of Tamilnadu, SCINDeA has undertaken the promotion of the local flora and fauna, through mangrove restoration in 5 acres of the coastal area to strengthen climate resilience, mitigate flooding, reduce erosion and improve the livelihood of the fishing community. So far 125 families from 10 villages have benefitted socially and economically.
As the name suggests, mini-forests are small areas of forest cover. They are developed in open spaces in the villages & close to schools & temples. Saplings are planted at a distance of 3 square meters each, which is far denser than in normal forests. Mini forests, though small, can make significant contributions to natural as well as human environments. They provide carbon sequestration, shade to mitigate heat, soil improvement as well as contributing to improved bio-diversity. At the panchayat level in the SCINDeA area of operation 37 mini forests have been developed @ 1 village / panchayat.
8 demonstration plots have been developed by 8 farmers in the SCINDeA area of operation. Each farmer dedicates a plot in their fields to showcase land development, production of organic fertilizers & pesticides, water management & a basket of climate smart sustainable agricultural practices that contribute to climate mitigation.
Networking and Collaboration with Govt. depts, duty bearer and likeminded NGOs is a crucial element to address the issues affecting the people at the grass-root level. It ensures community resilience. To this extent SCINDeA organizes every year an annual campaign at the field level and central level addressing several issues such as climate change and its impact, violence against girl children, youth, technology and its impact, creating a drug free society, the impact of climate change on agriculture etc., Around 5000 community members participated and benefitted from the campaigns in the last 2 years.
